Plot Summary

Anton (Gabriel Casseus) isn't like the other kids in Harlem. He’s naïve and lacks street smarts, but he has a heart of gold and a dream to use his extraordinary operatic singing voice on stage. Running away from his aunt’s house to find his place in the world, Anton is conned out of his money by Wes (Damon Wayans), a quick-witted street hustler. Anton later encounters a charismatic street musician Matthew (Christian Carmargo), who invites him to sing accompaniment. Wes witnesses Anton's wowing the crowds and sees a golden opportunity. The three men's lives entwine and lead each down a path of destruction, truth and redemption.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Missing no stops on the road from cloying to annoying, Harlem Aria has waited more than 10 years for domestic release. Maybe its destiny has been written. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Despite pro handling on both sides of he camera, the storytelling and filmmaking ring false, especially, in the characterizations. – Robert Koehler, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: Racial tensions and bawdy humor carry the day, until, following an unfunny set piece at a fancy hotel and a street robbery, black and white (far too) easily come together to help their young charge. – Andrew Schenker, Village Voice, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Harlem Aria has been gathering dust since it screened at the Toronto Film Festival in 1999. Why it is now getting a release is something Congress should look into. – V.A. Musetto, New York Post, Jul 7, 2010
