Plot Summary

The goal of Hawaii, a Voice for Sovereignty is to raise awareness of the issues that threaten the Hawaiians’ ancient and once-environmentally-sustainable culture. It is an epic documentary about Hawaiian spirituality and the people’s close connection to the land. It focuses on the complicated social, economic and ecological issues that have arisen in Hawaii since the overthrow of Queen Liliuokalani by the United States in 1893. For Hawaiians, sovereignty is the legal, political and moral right to live on and care for the land; build and grow a sustainable economy; protect natural resources; practice spiritual and cultural traditions; honor their ancestral past; and care for family and community. The film is in the voice of native Hawaiian people who address the issues they continue to face in their long struggle to regain sovereignty over their rights and the native lands lost after the U. S. businessmen and military overthrew the Kingdom of Hawaii.

Touching & Informative

I watched A Voice of Sovereignty during my flight to Honolulu to get a synapsis on the Native Hawaiian perspective on their history and culture as it relates to them and the United States. I feel the documentary was well-balanced in that although it was a pro-{Hawaiian} film, it did not blatantly bash the United States as an evil empire that needed to be overthrown. Though the opinions in the film were heavily against the actions of the US in their eyes (and rightly so IMO), they included bits and pieces of US actions that were cooperative in the Native viewpoint.

I would recommend anyone who has any interest in Hawaiian culture, or individuals who plan to visit the islands to watch this documentary to gain an understanding of the Hawaiian view of the Republic they are associated with. It has brought a greater respect for the ancient islands history, and enhanced my vacation by deepening my knowledge of their history.

Hawaiian Nation

This was the best entertainment I have watched in a very long time. This is a true and real issue facing the Hawaiian Nation. I grew up and was educated in Hawaii. I moved to the mainland to complete a Mater Degree in education where I am now ashamed to say that I too have been consumed in the the world of ancient and natural island disconnect. This film proves that we need to change our way of life to make a difference in this planet we live on. Ua Mau ke Ea o ka 'Āina i ka Pono
