Plot Summary

After his plans to assassinate a corrupt businessman go awry, dutiful-cop-turned-cynical-hitman Tul wakens from a three-month coma to find his vision has been completely inverted. Events are slowly revealed to the audience in this noir thriller through a chronology that traverses various stages of Tul's life prior to the failed assassination attempt. Events become increasingly more puzzling when Tul becomes infatuated with an alluring stranger, and the cause of Tul's condition, whether the result of a biological anomaly or some spiritual punishment, takes an unexpected turn.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: A dreamy, elliptical neo-noir about a cop turned killer turned something else altogether. – Manohla Dargis, New York Times, Sep 27, 2012

Rotten: Neither fresh nor especially satisfying, but Ratanaruang distinguishes the hunt with his fluid kineticism, especially in the just-a-touch-too-infrequent shoot-outs and beatdowns. – Alan Scherstuhl, Village Voice, Sep 25, 2012

Fresh: If the titular headshot leaves Tul with inverted vision, the film too turns the characteristics of genre upside-down, defamiliarising everything - an effect that is helped considerably by Ratanaruang's way with moody stylisation. – Anton Bitel, Little White Lies, Mar 5, 2013

Fresh: Its vision of contemporary Thailand is recognizable as another society undeserving of redemption, but worthy of poetry. – Eric Hynes, Time Out New York, Sep 25, 2012

Poor

Gave it a try but after a while I gave up and fast forwarded thru the rest. Waste of time!

Very enjoyable

I completely enjoyed this film. While it looks like an action film (and it is), it offers philosophical content not generally seen in this genre. Great to see works of this level coming out of Thailand and Pen-Ek Ratanaruang is a director to watch for. Definitely worth a view.

Unique and entertaining

What could be worse than waking from a coma to find that people are trying to finish you off? Ratanaruang shows us, successfully flipping the cherished but often tired cat-and-mouse game storyline upside-down.
