Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Hicks ... coats the film in a bogus idyllic mist that substitutes cheap sentiment for blunt truth.
Fresh: The unblinking sympathy for kids struggling with evil and with the strange frequencies of prepubescent passion can, if your defenses are down, lay you out.
Rotten: Unabashedly sentimental, it's meant to touch our hearts in profound and important ways, but misses the mark by drawing too deeply from a pool of schmaltz.
Fresh: A sweet coming-of-age story set in the summer of 1960, akin in mood to [King's] Stand by Me.

Worst Adaptation, Ever
I am a huge King fan, and Hearts in Atlantis is one of my most favorite novels by America's greatest novelist. Haveing said this, this is one of the worst adaptations of a Stephen King novel. If i hadnn't read the book first I might have liked it more. I wish the screenplay writer and the director had tried harder to be faithful.
good adaption
Now for a book to movie transfer it's alright. I would watch rent or do what ever you would like to do. This movie is fast paced and full of drama and excitement. please give this a chance and give the book a chance.
amazing and bittersweet
I first saw this as a child. In fact the actor Aton Yelchin and I are around the same age. I didn't understand the significances of moments in our childhood that would follow us into our adulthood and how we treasure those moments. There's a point where the narrator is a middle age man and he says,"When we're children a day can last forever. When we become adults years can pass in a blink of an eye." It's very touching and makes me think of my own childhood. it's a lovely and bittersweet film with a great story and excellent cast. A must see!
