Plot Summary

When a crew of highly skilled jewel thieves is not paid the money they are owed for a job, they are forced to make one last, big heist for the man who cheated them. To make things even more difficult, the crew must take this man's inexperienced, hotheaded nephew along on the job. Double-crosses are accomplished with blazing speed and skill in this masterfully written and acted crime drama starring Academy Award winner Gene Hackman ("The Royal Tenenbaums," "The Replacements"), Delroy Lindo ("Romeo Must Die," "Gone in 60 Seconds"), Rebecca Pidgeon ("State and Main," "The Winslow Boy"), Ricky Jay ("Magnolia," "Boogie Nights"), Sam Rockwell ("Charlie's Angels," "Galaxy Quest") and Danny DeVito ("Death to Smoochy," "Man on the Moon"). Written and directed by David Mamet ("State and Main," "The Spanish Prisoner").

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Full of action and suspense, Heist is above all a gratifyingly adult entertainment. – Kevin Thomas, Los Angeles Times, Feb 24, 2007

Rotten: There's something offensive about how Mamet continues to win praise as a serious filmmaker with such a joyless picture, a picture that -- intentionally -- gives the audience so little. – Charles Taylor, Salon.com, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: David Mamet drives us crazy with a characteristically convoluted caper film that's a lot more about attitude and sleight of hand than it is about action. Mischievous, but you really have to go with the flow. – John Anderson, Newsday, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: I couldn't believe any of it on any level, though it could be described as 'fun.' – Andrew Sarris, New York Observer, Jun 24, 2010

Worth watching

This is an interesting and engaging movie, reminiscent of another David Mamet film "The Spanish Prisoner". It is well acted, moves at a good pace, full of plot surprises and predictably unpredictable. R rating is for the wealth of course language, but I really liked this film. The principles, Gene Hackman and Danny Devito, deliver solid performances. It is not your standard fare, and I understand that some people may not like the film (my wife doesn't get David Mamet films). If you're unsure, rent it rather than buy it, but it is certainly well worth a look. I recommend it.

good movie

I thought it was pretty smart and entertaining, definitely worth seeing

High school production

Want to see a reel con movie...watch The Score, Italian Job, Bank Job, Ocean's Eleven, etc. But don't waste your time and money on this low budget, poorly executed high school production!
