Plot Summary
From his embed with US Marines Echo Company in Afghanistan, photojournalist and filmmaker Danfung Dennis reveals the devastating impact a Taliban machine-gun bullet has on the life of 25-year-old Sergeant Nathan Harris. The film seamlessly transitions from stunning war reportage to an intimate, visceral portrait of one man's personal struggle at home in North Carolina, where Harris confronts the physical and emotional difficulties of re-adjusting to civilian life with the love and support of his wife, Ashley. Masterfully contrasting the intensity of the frontline with the unsettling normalcy of home, HELL AND BACK AGAIN lays bare the true cost of war.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: You can feel just how jarring and stressful it must be for a soldier to go from the life-and-death adrenaline rush of war to the maddeningly slow world of rehabilitation and forced inactivity.
Fresh: Working alone with a camera and his ingenuity, Dennis captured the surreality of firefights with an invisible enemy and the frustration of displaced civilians.
Fresh: The director has no intention of making a prefab antiwar statement. He simply wants to show us an experience, just as it happened, and let the chips fall where they may.
Fresh: Dennis's film attempts something few documentaries have: to inhabit the psyche of its subject.

He's a Marine not a soldier
He's a Marine not a soldier, big differance
Shows the frustrations of OEF
I was there during all of this (with 2/8) and I must say it really does show the frustrations of OEF. I've been following it since it was Battle for Hearts and Minds and I was digging the old king kong music but this should be an eye opener for the ret of America. This is more than just shoot em up footage.
Extraordinary war movie
The way Dennis weaves the story in and out of the field puts the audience right inside his protagonist's head. It is a marvelous feat. Moving, disturbing and unforgettable. Beautifully filmed and beautifully told.
