Plot Summary

Eleven veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan join an expedition to climb the 20,000-foot Himalayan giant Mount Lobuche. With blind adventurer Erik Weihenmayer and a team of Everest summiteers as their guides, they set out on an emotional and gripping climb to reach the top in an attempt to heal the emotional and physical wounds of the longest war in U.S. history. Representing nearly every branch of the military, the veterans, and the Gold Star Mom who joins their trek, bring humor and deep emotion to this hero’s journey all captured with breathtaking, vertigo-inducing cinematography by three-time Emmy winner, director Michael Brown.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Brown ... translates a collage of experiences - some desperate, some hopeful, all tragic - into a first-person commentary on the malign reverberations of war. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Nov 1, 2012

Fresh: "High Ground" is a moving documentary that is both the film it presents itself to be and something more. – Kenneth Turan, Los Angeles Times, Nov 1, 2012

Fresh: [An] impressively restrained documentary ... – Ernest Hardy, Village Voice, Nov 1, 2012

Fresh: Brown takes advantage of the opportunity to present a broad array of feelings, less on the nature of these conflicts in particular and more on the mindset of the soldier in war - and the difficulties faced when no longer in the midst of the conflict. – Ian Buckwalter, NPR, Nov 2, 2012

Inspirational and beautiful

True stories are always the best stories, and stories don't get much more "true" than those told by the soldiers in High Ground. An entire generation of Americans have become desensitized to the realities of war, myself included. Hearing soldiers share their post-war struggles, both physical and emotional, was heartbreaking. Watching as they take small steps towards overcoming those struggles was heartwarming. The cinematography in this movie is stunning, as is the soundtrack and score. I can't recommend this movie enough!

Depressing

U want to give this movie more stars but it was just slow & uneventfull. A lot of the veterans just don't give u reason to feel for them. I mean one them was just a helicopter mechanic & said she had PTSD! She was often crying and I didn't understand why. And then the guys who were missing legs and such were like super happy!
