Plot Summary

Beyond the hysteria of "Reefer Madness" and past the deceptive lessons of "Just Say No," "High: The True Tale of American Marijuana" exposes the true story of America's war on drugs. Using government statistics, expert interviews and a large dose of humor, "High: The True Tale of American Marijuana" takes a fresh look at this hot button issue and asks just how much this "war" costs the American taxpayer, an important question to ask in our current economic crisis. How the U.S. government operates, often knowingly misinforming the public, and who benefits from its policies is an important question for every citizen, regardless of political party. Director John Holowach provides both the necessary historical background and current events for sober answers on marijuana and the DEA's impact on people's health and well-being in our modern society in his first documentary, "High: The True Tale of American Marijuana." It includes a violent drug treatment program that tortured children; an overbearing drug czar that doesn't care for the people he hurts in his quest; patients who are being denied the medications they need; doctors being prosecuted for trying to help them; and a substance that we all know of, but nobody wants to talk about.

Pretty cheap and amateurish

I wanted to like this movie, and although there was some interesting information revealed and cool moments, it just didn't deliver. First, all the technical aspects of the film were very poorly done: The camera work, the editing, sound mixing, scoring - All are sub-par. This feels more like a student film than anything else, and it may very well be. The director/narrator sounds like he's 15 years old, and the whole thing feels very amateurish. Very slow, very boring in parts and nowhere near as polished and entertaining as "Super High Me" or "Grass."

That said, it did have its moments. Some good information shared, lots of interviews (unfortunately none with any celebrities or politicians), a few creative bits... But all in all it was a let down. Feels like a freshman film-school project, not a professional product ready for mass consumption online. (:

Is that maybe because you ran out of bud?
