Plot Summary

If you liked the Academy Award winner Crash, you should love this film set in Nepal. As if the mountain terrain weren’t challenging enough, our bus is repeatedly stopped by bandhs—spontaneous civil disobedience blockades—a frequent phenomenon since the end of the civil war. Meanwhile, a young woman can’t decide between her boyfriend and the fiancé arriving to marry her; a gay man hopes to reunite with his estranged lover; a soldier rushes to his wife in time to try out a fertility potion he’s swallowed (not knowing she’s kept some secrets from him); and the bus driver knows the woman he loves may be forced back into prostitution if he doesn’t show up with money for her sick child. Deepak Rauniyar’s debut feature has provoked a tumultuous response from Nepali audiences with its realistic characters and their taboo-shrouded issues. Rendered in an improvised cinematic style that heightens an already wild ride, Highway is being called the harbinger of a new era in Nepali filmmaking.

two thumbs up

... this movie captures the new Nepali culture and context quite well. Simply put: life in Nepal is mostly a bummer ...the characters are well developed and delivery is natural. It is dark, sad, and cerebral and I loved it although I cannot quite relate to the lives portrayed in the movie... The ending was wide open for interpretation similar to Traffic by Soderberg and No country for old men by the Coen brothers. These comparisons should say volumes about the quality of direction and story telling that glued the many themes together without coming undone. Roger and Ebert would have given Highway two thumbs up. I will drink to its success...

Highway

This groundbreaking film captures the essence of everyday life in Nepal: deeply gentle human interaction amidst the chaotic outward appearances of the general public. The bus riders are a slice of life--representing the many layers of society--who have many private layers within as well. The intricately woven stories of the main characters are gradually revealed with all of the human joy, sorrow, love, and disappointment to go along with them. Life truly IS a journey. Enjoy this one.
