Plot Summary

Deported crime boss Nick Ferraro (Emmy-winner Raymond Burr "Rear Window") needs to re-enter the United States to run his operation. His plan involves hard-up gambler Dan Milner (Golden Globe-winner Robert Mitchum "Cape Fear"), who is persuaded, both by a series of beatings and a substantial sum of money, to sell his identity to Nick. En route, Dan meets the singer Lenore Brent (Jane Russell "Gentlemen Prefer Blondes"), who is actually posing as an heiress, trying to marry a millionaire. On arrival at posh resort in Baja California, Dan finds the ostensibly rich, carefree guests all playing roles...except for the Hollywood actor Mark Cardigan (Vincent Price "House on Haunted Hill," "Edward Scissorhands"). Directed by Oscar-winner John Farrow ("Around the World in 80 Days").

Customer Reviews

More imaginative than any B movie - It's more like an A-

Set expectations low and this is a hilarious surprise of a film. It builds the noir setup slowly and seriously as it creates an odd world of interconnected motives. Every scene is just long enough to keep curiosity high. The characters continually push right to the edge of camp.
And then Vincent Price shows up with the kind of role that anyone with any sense of humor would kill to play. He keeps self loathing as confusing and occasionally creepy as it must be in real life. Maybe a little more so, but just for effect. What do we make of the duck scene?
The whole point is to setup a mashup of Mengeles, Corleones, Barrymores, and Indiana Jones... and of course there is a dame. The fashions, sets and songs are straight from Sears Roebuck. The direction knows just where to go with a limited budget to keep you looking around every corner.
The Maltese Falcon it ain't - but it was definitely worth a rental.
