Plot Summary

Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell star in this hilarious, non-stop action-packed comedy costarring Bradley Cooper, Kristin Chenoweth and Tom Arnold. A nice guy with a questionable past, Charlie Bronson (Shepard), risks everything when he busts out of a witness protection program to drive his girlfriend (Bell) to Los Angeles for the job opportunity of a lifetime. Their road trip grows awkwardly complicated, however, when they’re chased by an inept fed (Arnold) and Charlie’s ex-pal (Cooper), a vengeance-crazed criminal he helped put behind bars. Hit & Run is a high-speed race to the finish where the brakes are off and the chase is on.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: The trouble with Hit & Run is that it can't sustain its trippy effervescence. Despite a few scrappy twists and turns, it's ultimately a dead end. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Aug 23, 2012

Fresh: Hit and Run lures you in with its jackalope rhythms. There's nothing else like it on the current landscape. – Stephanie Zacharek, NPR, Aug 23, 2012

Rotten: Shepard and Palmer just don't do anything terribly exciting with the film's vehicles, drawn mostly from Shepard's personal collection. – Lou Lumenick, New York Post, Aug 24, 2012

Fresh: Hit and Run has a bouncy, goofy charm. – CJ Johnson, ABC Radio (Australia), Dec 4, 2012

Funny

I saw this movie in the theatre on a whim and it was suprisingly funny and entertaining. The cars are amazing, and while the plot is silly the movie is truly hilarious at times.

DON'T "RUN" TO SEE THIS FILM

"Hit and Run" is definitely one of the more stranger movies I've seen in 2012. It's basically a raunchy rom-com about a couple (Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard) that decide to leave their small town and hit the road to L.A. for the job opportunity of a lifetime. Sounds pretty simple, right? Well, it would be, except that Bell's boyfriend is actually in a witness protection program for testifying about a robbery that he took part in. At the same time, her ex is out to expose him for the fraud he is in the hopes of getting back together with his former flame. Needless to say, the plot is all over the place and never properly takes the time to explain itself. It doesn't help that all the characters are unbelievably idiotic and hopelessly underwritten to the point where you just don't care what happens to them by the end of the film. Heck, not even the over-the-top car chase scenes are as fun or enjoyable as they should be. Bradley Cooper was the only actor in the entire film that actually made me laugh, and not just because of his ridiculous dreadlocks. The few scenes he manages to star in are absolutely hilarious, even if his role as the movie's main antagonist isn't very convincing. Tom Arnold, on the other hand, is so overly reliant on clichéd slapstick gags that his character is more embarrassing to watch than entertaining. But I digress. In the end, there isn't much to recommend about "Hit and Run", other than the few scenes it has with Cooper in them. Bell and Shepard's characters don't make for likable or memorable protagonists, the vulgar comedy is all over the place, and the flick doesn't know whether it wants to be a rom-com or a straightforward car chase movie. I just don't think this is the kind of film that's worth spending your money on. At the very least, wait till it airs on TV for free and see it then.
