Plot Summary

STILL IN THEATERS! Filmmaker P. David Ebersole looks past the public train wreck of Courtney Love to focus his lens on Hole drummer Patty Schemel, whose harrowing struggles with addiction undercut her role as the driving force of one of the '90s most popular bands. Though Love garnered most of the attention as the outspoken singer for Hole, Schemel's beats gave the songs a driving force that shot them to the top of the charts. But the higher that Hole ascended, the harder that Schemel fell. In this documentary, interviews with Love and other key players in the Seattle music scene tell the story of an unsung music icon who never got her due.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: "Hit So Hard" is the touching story of how and why Ms. Schemel ended up in her own private hell and how and why she made her way out again into the world of sunshine, sobriety and puppy dogs. – Manohla Dargis, New York Times, Apr 12, 2012

Fresh: Though stylistically incoherent at times, pic benefits from the percussionist's plainspokenness. – Ronnie Scheib, Variety, Apr 13, 2012

Rotten: Ebersol seems uncertain throughout of what tale he is telling, whether to focus on Schemel specifically or the larger picture of the band and the moments in contemporary rock history they were all witness to. – Mark Olsen, Los Angeles Times, Apr 19, 2012

Fresh: This keenly-observed, if generically-assembled, Grunge-era doc tells the Hole story through the eyes of its successfully rehabbed drummer. – Michael Rechtshaffen, Hollywood Reporter, Apr 13, 2012

Authentic Recovery Story

In a time when rehab is cool, this documentary "keeps it real". Authentic story of painful addiction, relapse, and eventual recovery against the odds. It's tremendously difficult to admit the shameful behaviors associated with addiction. I applaud Patty for her bravery and honesty. I felt less alone and hopeful after watching her story.

Dark Hatter

I really enjoyed this film. Not only is Patty a great drummer, she is also an inspiration to anyone dealing with addiction. Just a very thoughtful and well made picture. Watch it - especially if you're interested in persona versus the authentic self. Well done!

Very Good!

Let's not forget these 90s iconic bands, but more importantly the people that made the band! In a lot of cases they give up their life path to take the detour of stardom....some never get their train back on the tracks, but luckily Patty was able to rebound!

This was a great doc!
