Classic Hollywood at its Best
Simply put, If you love classic Hollywood Movies, you should see this movie! This movie features location shootings around Hollywood in the early 1940s, and is full of classic Hollywood stars. It is based on the actual Hollywood Canteen, with a cute storyline created for the movie. The movie stars even poke fun at their own expense, and is just all-around an enjoyable movie!
Great Picture!
If you want to see how Hollywood big wigs acted toward the servicemen way back in the "good old days" this is the movie you won't want to miss! Not only has it got lots of star quality, its got some fantastic musical numbers, and a very sweet sub plot. It must have been a big morale booster for the guys over seas.
Music, song, dance… and Joan Leslie!
This movie is half variety show/half romance, and serves also as a quasi-documentary. I.e., the Hollywood Canteen was a real place, a real entertainment center provided by Hollywood luminaries for servicemen visiting L.A., so you'll learn all about that. It's a Warner Brothers movie, so dozens of their leading lights show up to perform music, dance or comedy as they see fit (some of them while serving meals for the guests). And among all this, a classically Hollywood tale of a visiting serviceman with a longing desire just to see Joan Leslie, who, playing a fictionalized version of herself, lets him lay a bit more than just his eyes on her (within a surprisingly believable storyline - their chemistry is very plausible). So this one is a must-see by many standards, and especially for Joan Leslie fans. Basically the stars of the movie are her and Robert Hutton as the love story, and Bette Davis and John Garfield as the driving forces behind the Canteen itself, but anyone will even half a knowledge of Hollywood's Golden Age will be amazed by all the cameos, and the sheer variety of performances.
(Hey Apple, if someone does a search for Joan Leslie, this one should turn up, but it currently does not. It's probably not turning up for Bette Davis either - might wanna fix that.)
