Plot Summary

Based on the true story of Hollywood's most notorious unsolved mystery, Hollywoodland is a tale of glamour, scandal, and corruption in 1950's Los Angeles. When George Reeves (Ben Affleck), star of TV's Adventures of Superman, is found dead in his home, millions of fans are shocked by the circumstances of his death. The police and the studio bosses want the case closed as a suicide, but rumors linger. Louis Simo (Adrien Brody), a private investigator, picks up the trail and begins to piece together the actor's last, tension-filled days. Who pulled the trigger? Was it the seductive yet scheming fiancee, the spurned lover (Diane Lane), the enraged husband (Bob Hoskins), or was it Reeves himself?

Fresh: In his generous spirit toward a forgotten icon, Affleck turns the death-obsessed Hollywoodland into, of all things, a film about resurrection. – Peter Travers, Rolling Stone, Nov 24, 2006

Fresh: Hollywoodland explores an intriguing bit of Hollywood history, and through the strength of its performances keeps us engaged and entertained. – Claudia Puig, USA Today, Sep 1, 2007

Fresh: ... even though parts of the picture don't quite hold together, in the end, it sticks with you. – Stephanie Zacharek, Salon.com, Jul 7, 2010

Rotten: The film, actually, is a little like Reeves himself: It starts promisingly and trails off into indistinctness and mystery. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Sep 23, 2006

Decent. Could have been so much more...

Why is it, friends, that whenever Hollywood makes a film based on historical fact, that they have to change the facts? To invent characters who didn't exist? They'll say it's to make things "more cinematic, more action-packed, condensed," etc. But most times, truth is stranger than fiction, and some stories don't need any embellishing. This movie, for instance, was fine. But if you know about the history, you'll know that Adrien Brody's character DIDN'T EXIST! There were detectives and private eyes working the case, but not the character from the movie. Big deal, right? Well, it wouldn't be, except that Adrien Brody is the STAR of the movie! It's supposed to be about the death of George Reeves, but instead the movie focusses most of its time on a person who isn't even real! And if they were going to focus on the private eye working the case, why not make it about the REAL private eye? And if you're going to make a movie about George Reeves, one of the most tragic, interesting and mysterious stories in film history, why spend so little time with GEORGE? Ben Affleck actually does a pretty good job, though he looks nothing like Reeves. But we don't see him enough! The movie is too busy spending time with its invented-fictional detective, and focussing on his relationship with his wife and son, etc. Who cares?? Not me! I want to see the story of George Reeves, the true story! And I want someone to make a movie about the 300 Spartans, and actually NOT take a huge dump on the memory of those brave men who gave their lives for freedom! That and every other "historical drama" that re-writes history and ignores what actually happened, I want to see re-made! The people deserve the truth!!! I'm right, and anyone who disagrees with me is wrong! Jesse has spoken!

Brilliant

I really didn't expect what I got from this movie. And, I really wanted some kind of closure in the plot. And, the movie was better for it. Very well acted. Gripping. Savory. After watching this movie I felt as if I had just had a wonderfully satisfying meal. Good to see Ben Affleck acting well; he showed depth in this movie. Good for him.

This is a vary good movie

This is the kind of movie that leaves you at the end thinking "Maybe"!!!....this movie has it all drama, suspense, and of course great actor's and actress's ...
