Plot Summary

Jason Statham, James Franco, Winona Ryder and Kate Bosworth star in this action-packed thriller about how far one man will go to protect his family. Widowed ex-DEA agent Phil Broker (Statham) retires to a quiet Southern town with his 10-year-old daughter and discovers that the idyllic setting is riddled with drugs and violence. When a riveting chain of events forces him to face off with psychotic local drug lord Gator Bodine (Franco), Broker must retaliate using the fearsome skills he hoped to keep in his past. From screenwriter Sylvester Stallone, Homefront is “an absolute blast! A thrill ride from start to finish!” (Chris Parente, FOX-TV)

The Rolling Stone Rule

If Rolling Stone pans it, it must be great!

Mindless power fantasy

First off, Let me state that I went to see this film with my father during the Christmas Holiday of 2013. We both came out of the films laughing about the over the top one liners and brutal action sequences. However, we both agreed it was a good "guys night out" flick.

With that being said, the film does have some pretty blatant faults. For example, first 15 minutes of this film are horrible. The costume design makes Jason Statham look like a fool and the action is comically bad like that of an 80s spoof. You'll undoubtedly be wondering if you wasted money after the introduction.

However after Homefront's really bad first impression, you'll find yourself enjoying a rather enjoyable action film about a Southern father's struggle to protect his daughter from a meth dealer played by James Franco. While the henchmen serve as typical cannon fodder for Statham to smack down in various ways, James Franco and Winona Rider bring some depth to the bad guys which is rarely seen in these simple action flicks. The middle portion of the film was undoubtedly my favorite part.

However in the conclusion, the screen writer, Sylvester Stallone, takes the easy way out and brings back the cookie cutter, over the top, initial villians last seen in the introduction of the film and squanders the opportunity to create a meaningful plot around meth abuse with James Franco leading the way. Instead, he chooses the very cliche, Daddy against the world ending which feels very 80s inspired with none of the self aware, tongue and cheek attitude.
