Plot Summary

Superstar and Academy Award-winner Clint Eastwood ("Unforgiven," "Million Dollar Baby") is a Depression-era, hard-drinking country musician who's a man of the moment. He is also chasing a distinctly American dream -- to get to the Grand Ole Opry -- and is joined by his nephew (played by real-life son, Kyle) who attempts to keep his uncle sober and out of trouble. Time magazine says "Clint Eastwood shines," while CBS-TV calls this "a superior movie that's an adventure for the heart... Clint Eastwood has never been better -- with an impressive debut for Kyle." Co-starring Barry Corbin ("Northern Exposure") and directed by Eastwood, with a score of great country and western hits.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: It is a guileless tribute not only to plain values of plain people in Depression America, but also to the sweet spirit of country-and-western music before it got all duded up for the urban cowboys. – TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: Eastwood took great pains in telling this story of an aging, struggling country singer... – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: This is a sweet, whimsical, low-key movie, a movie that makes you feel good without pressing you too hard. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: The whole thing veers wildly in quality, and no Eastwood-hater should go within a mile of it; but few lovers of American cinema could fail to be moved by a venture conceived so recklessly against the spirit of its times. – Derek Adams, Time Out, Oct 26, 2008
