Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: You can never expect to see a film more handsomely played. – Bosley Crowther, New York Times, Jan 13, 2014

Fresh: The acting is strong, and Arthur Miller's Oscar-winning photography gives the images a spooky luster, but a little bit of Ford's salt-of-the-earth piety goes an awfully long way. – Ty Burr, Entertainment Weekly, Feb 19, 2013

Fresh: Because his recollections ring true, they are certain to evoke a similar nostalgia in all but the most slab-sided of moviegoers. – TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: How Green Was My Valley is one of the year's better films, a sure-fire critic's picture and, unlike most features that draw kudos from crix, this one will also do business. – Abel Green, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

How green was my valley

This is an awesome movie because of the cinematography, the acting and the story. It showed family life the way it used to be---real with all the arguing and kidding, but still always sticking together. I guess it is boring to have movies that actually give insight into our thoughts and traditions, and causes us to ask questions about right and wrong, our responsibility to family and community. I guess people today have a hard time imagining people not swearing every other word, dealing with hardships with dignity and not whining about it nonstop, showing respect to parents, and not baring their bodies and intimate thoughts and feelings to the whole world to titillate and gratify curiosity. This has earned its place as a worthwhile classic.

This beat Citizen Kane.... >:(

It's hard not to despise this film because it won Best Picture over Citizen Kane, but the cinematography is beautiful and the cast is decent. Not highly recommended because it's a little boring, but nevertheless recommended. Easily John Ford's greatest achievement in film.

Beautiful movie adaptation

Engaging, emotionally moving screen treatment of a fine story. Donald Crisp and Roddy McDowell are superb. The direction and editing are excellent. Highly recommended.
