Plot Summary

When a close friend dies of a sudden heart attack, middle-aged husbands Gus (John Cassavetes), Archie (Peter Falk) and Harry (Ben Gazzara) face their own mortality by going on an extended, four-day bender. Beginning in the streets and bars of New York City, the three buddies reminisce, ride the subways, shoot hoops, and drink their way to the hotels and casinos of London, where they pick up women and gamble. Finally, Gus and Archie have had enough adventure and return to their Long Island homes and families, while Harry decides he'd rather stay in England and enjoy his newfound freedom.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: It is almost unbearably long. It is a narrative film without any real narrative, and although it is a movie about three characters, those characters are seen almost exclusively in terms of their limiting relationship. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: Few films capture with such life-affirming wonder the despair, hatred, and incomprehension that drives the sexes together and apart. – Richard Brody, New Yorker, May 3, 2013

Fresh: A brilliantly textured film to be savoured. – Peter Bradshaw, Guardian, Sep 27, 2012

Fresh: Husbands may not be structurally perfect, but it's an unsentimental dissection of ego, fear and masculinity nonetheless. – Matthew Thrift, Little White Lies, Sep 27, 2012

Cassavetes' Masterpiece

Quite simply put, the truest, rawest, most unflinching portrait of American men approaching middle age ever put on the screen.
