Plot Summary

"I AM" is the story of a successful Hollywood director Tom Shadyac, who experienced a life threatening head injury, and his ensuing journey to try and answer two very basic questions, "What's wrong with our world?" and "What can we do about it?". Tom visits some of today's great minds, including authors, poets, teachers, religious leaders and scientists searching for the fundamental problem that causes all of the other problems, while simultaneously reflecting on his own life choices of excess, greed, and eventual healing.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: It's not just that Mr. Shadyac makes big leaps and sometimes papers over contradictions. It's also that after a while everyone starts to sound the same: a little beatific, a little high on wonder, a little platitudinous. – Rachel Saltz, New York Times, Mar 18, 2011

Rotten: An earnest, lumpy macrame of a personal nonfiction project... – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Mar 9, 2011

Rotten: Whatever leaps of logic yawn in the film's poorly cobbled-together arguments are papered over by its wash of button-pushing images, from regimented soldiers and deadly explosions to flocks of wild geese and sunbeams breaking through the clouds. – Ronnie Scheib, Variety, Dec 13, 2011

Fresh: What lifts the film above its dubious boilerplate assemblage of talking heads and archival images is Shadyac himself. – Sheri Linden, Los Angeles Times, Mar 10, 2011

Well done!

I'm not sure if the folks at rotten tomatoes viewed the same movie as we did. If they did, then they didn't get the point. We are living in a time that when anyone can reach out and show some light when some much darkness prevails. i say job well done! This wasn't a film intended for the oscars. It was meant to reach the heart of all of us. I say great Job Mr Shadyac. Please do more work like I am….

Excellent movie!! My whole family cried..

This movie us about what makes us human...and that we do connect with each other more than we can comprehend.

Wonderful MUST SEE movie!

I am baffled by the Rotten Tomato reviews. I saw this in the theatres and returned with friends. I plan on gifting this film to friends and family. Great film with a great message that is timely now to all of us. By all means check out this film.
