Plot Summary
Armed with nothing more than twigs, their imaginations and a simple set of rules, a group of 12-year-olds engaged in a lively game of Capture the Flag in the neighborhood woods start dangerously blurring the lines between make-believe and reality. Rocks = Grenades. Trees = Control towers. Sticks = Submachine guns. The youthful innocence of the game gradually takes on a different tone as the quest for victory pushes the boundaries of friendship. The would-be warriors get a searing glimpse of humanity's dark side as their combat scenario takes them beyond the rules of the game and into an adventure where fantasy combat clashes with the real world.

Rotten: Co-directors Jason Lapeyre and Robert Wilson do little more than repeatedly echo the pic's theme after establishing the basic conceit of Lapeyre's script in the opening minutes.
Fresh: The performances may be slightly uneven across the cast of a dozen distinct personalities (plus a dog), but overall the effect works because, after all, they're just playacting ... right?
Fresh: Humor and hurt feelings collide in entertaining teen adventure.
Fresh: Its heroes are kids; its villains are kids; its fantasies are kids'. But its truths are adult.

Don't Believe the Hype
This movie is not in the same league with Stand By Me or Lord of the Flies. It's a character study of how different personality types deal with adolescence, and the horrible things kids do to each other—often without realizing that their being cruel. It's not bad, but neither is it particularly good or especially entertaining.
