Plot Summary
Richard (Thomas Jane), Ron (Jeremy Piven), Jonathan (Rob Lowe), and Tim (Christian McKay) are friends from college who gather each year for a hardcore weekend of partying. As the weekend progresses, fueled by sex, drugs and rock ‘n’ roll, their reunion drives them to an unexpected place where each is forced to confront himself and the choices he’s made in his life.

Melt Sticks with You
I was surprised to see some negative responses to this film. I actually rented it from Demand and watched it twice. This movie is exactly why I love independent films so much as it taps into the psyche and sticks with you long after the movie is over. Melt is a raw portrayal of four, 40 something guys who made a pact in college to never forget what it felt like to be free. During their yearly, week long vacation/reunion, they each examine their lives and their shortcomings realizing that they are no longer the free spirits they were in their college days. Life has now become a web of un-met responsibilities, disappointments, failures, loss and confusion. The four of them spin out of control on a week long drug binge mixed with alcohol, pharmaceuticals and hallucinogens. The common theme is one that all people in their 40's encounter....that is examine where they are in life....sort of going up to the mountain top. The difference is these 4 individuals made a pact 25 years earlier. A pact that had detrimental consequences. Loved the music! Tough movie to watch but unable to look away. I, personally, loved the acting and could see each character as someone I had gone to college with.
Over-privileged, post-40 crap
Why bother? While the visuals of Big Sur are stunning, this pathetic post-40 mid-life crisis dung heap of a film is a waste of time. Did the cast sign on for roles they thought would demonstrate their ability to portray a breadth of emotion and land them deeper, richer roles in the future? Whatever. In a time when we are all thankful for any work, family support, friendship and community we have, who wants to watch 122 minutes of post-40 guys in a multi-million dollar property, driving porsches with beautiful wives (even if ex), children, jobs etc. feeling this sorry for themselves? If that's the point - get real. Life is hard - buck up, work, appreciate.
Denial Helps us Survive
Melt is a great example of how we live in a constant state of denial of our true selves. The mask that we show to everyone, even our loved ones turns into a mirror in this film. When confronted with the true self and the optimism of youth, life is depressing. I enjoyed the first hour that draws you into the dark theme of the movie; although, the foreshadowing was obvious. I particularly liked Rob Lowe's character…a savvy drug addict masked as a physician. Great cast.
