Plot Summary

When Taryn (Deragh Campbell), a Northern Irish runaway, finds herself in trouble in Ocean City, MD, she seeks refuge in Baltimore with her aunt and uncle, Kim and Bill (Ned Oldham and Kim Taylor) who are having problems of their own: they're trying to dissolve their marriage gracefully for the sake of their daughter Abby (Hannah Gross), just home from her first year of college. A story of family revelations, people finding each other, letting go, looking for love where they've found it before and, figuring out where they might find it next.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Mr. Porterfield might sometimes be too subtle for his own good, but by taking us on a low-key ramble through the ever-shifting feelings of a fractured family, he has woven a dreamy, detached chronicle of dissolution and renewal. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Oct 3, 2013

Fresh: Scripted like a series of chronological snapshots seen from a slight distance, the film exhibits a contemplative quiet and attentiveness to detail that enhances its issues of regret, bitterness, and confusion ... – Nick Schager, Village Voice, Oct 1, 2013

Fresh: A lyrical ballad on an intimate scale but international in scope. – Richard Brody, New Yorker, Sep 30, 2013

Rotten: The couple, both musicians, are in the midst of a bitter breakup, and Porterfield frequently trains the camera on one or the other as each performs his melancholy tunes; this stops the narrative dead in its tracks. – J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader, Nov 7, 2013

I Used to be Darker

One of the slowest, lethargic, uninteresting or compelling wastes of time I have had to pay for. Average acting, thin plot, lazy cinematics, and overall lack of "life". Too bad, the trailer seemed like it might have been OK, not so for me.
