Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: There are those who will applaud what Haynes and his actors have accomplished, and I can understand its appeal on an intellectual level. But I am not a supporter of film without form or art without structure. – James Berardinelli, ReelViews, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: It doesn't all work and it runs too long. But every fragment of Dylan's life, every version of him, from the funny to the tippy, rings true. – Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: It willfully denies one of the sacred tenets of cinematic storytelling, that every movie -- comedy, romance or biography -- is actually a mystery, one the audience expects to see solved. – Terry Lawson, Detroit Free Press, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: To enjoy I'm Not There you should be just a little bit Dylan-crazy, fascinated by his talent, ornery personality and enduring cultural influence. – Liam Lacey, Globe and Mail, Jun 24, 2010

Groundbreaking

like bobs career itself this is a wild ride in different directions... seemingly unconnected ... a walking contridiction partly fact and partly fiction ... It is a brave exploration of one the most storied careers in music ... what better way to tell it with a multitude of stories and characters who are the same only different... like bobs songs themselves you come away wondering what it all Really means... great stuff... how refreshing to stay away from the formula biography... this movie breaks the mold and redefines how movies tell a story... a fitting tribute to Bob and the magic has created for 50 years...

A Movie So Confusing One Prays I'm Not There.

This movie is the absolute depths of horrible. Not my 99 cents worth, just my 2; very bad.

I waited a while to view this movie. I had began studying Dylan for many reasons, not the least of him being a friend of Johnny Cash, Willie Nelson & many others. I saw him in concert with Willie & John Mellencamp a few years ago just outside of Austin & read Chronicles which really intrigued me since it was written as a narrative by Bob. So when I saw this menagerie of his life I really felt that it symbolized his life for the most part. I enjoyed it...his life story was a history lesson for me! Two Thumbs up!!!
