Plot Summary
George Sand was perhaps the most celebrated novelist of the early nineteenth century and its most notorious Bohemian, better known in her own day than even Charles Dickens. Frederic Chopin was among the greatest musicians of his age. A prodigy who rapidly gained a legendary reputation all over Europe as both a pianist and a composer. IMPROMPTU is the comic and tender tale of how Goerge Sand and Chopin met; of how Sand recklessly pursued Chopin; how Chopin resisted Sand's advances; of how, despite the best and most mischievous efforts of many of those around them, they eventually fell in love.

Top Critics' Reviews
Fresh: Anna Massey, who appears fleetingly as Sand's mother, offers a demonstration of how to make an overpoweringly fine impression in only a few minutes' time.
Rotten: Despite all this assembled talent, the film stubbornly refuses to come to life.
Fresh: Director James Lapine pushes the story to its entertaining fullest, exuding a period-costumed sense of fun.
Fresh: A blissfully high-spirited romp about the circle of writers and musicians in 1830s Paris.

A delightful surprise
This film is as much a comedy as a romance. It will be nothing your suspected and will do little to satisfy the historians amongst us. What it is, however, is a delightful tale of an unconventional women succumbing to the most conventional of feelings – love. Beautifully performed by Judy Davis, it will have you laughing throughout and touched at its conclusion.
My all-time favorite
I love this movie so much. It's kind of historical fiction, considering the events of the movie never happened, but at the same time the characters are (for the most part) realistically portrayed. I think this is possibly Hugh Grant's best performance as Frederic Chopin, and Julian Sands is also brilliant as Franz Liszt. The movie is hilarious, and classical music fans will love the soundtrack!
19th Century Jerry Springer
I was looking for something along the lines of Sense & Sensibility, Pride & Prejudice, etc. Alas, this is more like watching a Jerry Springer show in a 19th century British set. Sorry I bought it. DELETE'd it.
