Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: For all his movie's tough talk, it's a sometimes slipshod construction. – Tom Charity, CNN.com, Dec 10, 2008

Fresh: This dark comedy shifts effortlessly between silly and sobering, and it finally gives Colin Farrell the chance to be as funny as we've long suspected he could be. – Roger Moore, Orlando Sentinel, May 13, 2009

Fresh: It plays really engagingly, with the leads doing a wonderful Mutt and Jeff act and the camera lingering lovingly over scenery that looks awfully pretty in the moments before it gets spattered with blood. – Bob Mondello, NPR.org, Nov 15, 2011

Fresh: McDonagh directs with supreme confidence, just as he writes. – Paul Byrnes, Sydney Morning Herald, Jun 24, 2010

Excellent film!

I saw In Bruges at the theatre. Loved it! It follows a pair of mismatched hitmen who are sent to hide in Bruges, the capital and largest city of the province of West Flanders in the Flemish Region of Belgium, after a disastrous job in London. This is by far Colin Farrell's finest screen performance to date, eclipsing excellent turns in films such as Tigerland, Minority Report, and A Home at the End of the World. The blend of hurt and grit which defines his performance here is very impressive. Brendan Gleeson and Ralph Fiennes also shine. This is the feature-length directorial debut of celebrated Irish playwright Martin McDonagh and the wit and creativity which made stage critics love him is definitely on display here. This film has every ingredient - action, COMEDY, drama, and romance. Where else can you get gory shootouts, hilariously dirty one-liners (many related to midgets), and the beautiful, mysterious atmosphere of Bruges all in one sitting? Recommended.

How did this not find an audience?

It is by far the best performance Colin Farrell has given. A really excellent, funny, violent, and ultimately moving film. I also recommend Martin McDonagh's Oscar-winning short, "Six Shooter" (also with Brendan Gleeson).

Great movie, but iTunes description is misleading

I really enjoyed this movie, but the iTunes description left me wanting something other than what I got. I got no outrageous or unpredictable fun out of it, but thought the characters were really interesting and brilliantly portrayed (Farrell is especially good). The movie is dark, amusing, and tragic, but at times uplifting and funny.
