Plot Summary

Set against the backdrop of the South African Truth and Reconciliation hearings, In My Country charts the depths of pain and suffering and the redeeming power of forgiveness and love. Washington Post journalist Langston Whitfield (Samuel L. Jackson) is skeptical about the process, feeling that it is just a way for the perpetrators to escape unscathed. Anna Malan (Juliette Binoche), an Afrikaaner poet and journalist, is enthusiastic, with great hopes of seeing her country healed. Instantly at odds over their opposing views, Langston and Anna are eventually drawn closer through the shared experience of listening to the moving and painful testimony. As Langston becomes increasingly drawn into Anna's world and her passion for the country of her birth, they both confront difficult questions.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: While applauding Boorman's efforts, it's hard to applaud his movie. – Ruthe Stein, San Francisco Chronicle, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: The film, an international co-production about the aftermath of South African apartheid, has won peace awards and comes with a thumbs up from Nelson Mandela himself, none of which make its contrivances easier to swallow. – Ty Burr, Boston Globe, Apr 2, 2005

Rotten: An academic dis-cussion punctuated by shots of magnificent countryside harboring unspeakable grief. – Jami Bernard, New York Daily News, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: A series of brief, appallingly simplistic vignettes that, rather than conveying the depth and complexity of South Africa's history and culture, distill it to the point of distortion. – Ann Hornaday, Washington Post, Jul 16, 2008
