Plot Summary
When Brooklynite Seth (Zach Gilford, Friday Night Lights) takes his girlfriend Andie (Jena Malone, Into the Wild, The Hunger Games: Catching Fire) to his family's weekend house in upstate New York for a romantic getaway, they are unexpectedly joined by his estranged father Gil (John Slattery, Mad Men), and his much-younger new girlfriend, Vicky (Gabrielle Union, 10 Things I Hate About You). The women carefully negotiate emotional minefields as they persuade father and son to share the house for the first time since the summer vacations of Seth's childhood. This unexpected family reunion in the great outdoors, fraught with tensions old and new, pushes them all to realize the bonds of family are always stronger and stranger than expected. From the producers of Meek's Cutoff and Wendy and Lucy, In Our Nature is a candid, delicately observed family portrait of couples at a crossroads.

Fresh: The confessions and conflicts that bubble up feel real and lived, if overly familiar to connoisseurs of that dreaded genre known as the dysfunctional-family drama.
Rotten: Savelson's approach feels old-fashioned and perhaps even a little stodgy.
Fresh: Beautifully observed characterizations and fine performances enliven this sometimes static drama about an unexpected family reunion.
Rotten: During their "getting to know you" scene, Seth asks Vicky, "Is everybody that predictable?" As far as In Our Nature goes, it would seem so.

Not bad
Just finished watching it. It's that type of movie you watch when you can't find a movie.
Dreckitude
In Our Nature does show the bitter underbelly that can lie within tense and conflicted family structures, but is not pleasant to watch AT ALL. Zach Gilford's character, a self involved spoiled brat hipster whose level of resentment towards his upper middle class upbringing and supposedly neglectful father is nearly epic in proportions. John Slattery's character is also completely self involved, but in a more diffident way. Gabrielle Union does very well in her characterization as does Jena Malone. Unfortunately, those characters are not enough to drive the film to a satisfying conclusion, especially during the main journey of the film in which , at every turn the characters are completely vicious to each other. My advice is to SAVE YOUR MONEY and do not rent this film.
Side Note: The one star is for the cinematography, Zach Gilford without a shirt, and the country cabin porn.
Worth Watching
John Slattery is worth watching in any role, in any movie. I liked the portrayal the son played of resentment towards his father. It's realistic because so often Dads stay wrapped up in their employment and forget they have children at home who need them; then use the excuse of being the provider etc etc. I felt it was typical of Slattery's character to feel clueless as to why his son has so much hostility. (check out the part where his son spills stuff on coffee table and he gets upset as a tightly-wound person often does about small things that don;t matter). Movie shows how Over time, sons grow up & away from their dads because they don't want to end up like them (over-involved in their work or whatever reason).
Thought it was honest slice of life seen from both sides (father & son).
