Plot Summary

Kenya native Kalu is the hotshot star striker of the “Malindi Sharks,” though he dreams of playing professional soccer. One day, Kalu gets an offer to play soccer on a second tier team in South Africa on the same day his father is killed in an accident and he unknowingly is exposed to the HIV virus. Kalu moves to urban Johannesburg to discover he’s no longer a local hero, even meeting resistance from his own team. Back on the soccer field, Kalu's new coach Valentine must convince his players to forget their differences and play as a team. Kalu's light-hearted “Black Stars” teammate Jabu befriends him and helps Kalu turn rivals into teammates. As he struggles to find his way in a strange place, Kalu begins a tepid friendship with Ify, the coach’s daughter. Their friendship grows as Ify seeks to thwart the unwanted advances of team owner Goodwill, who says that if she will not be intimate with him, her father’s job is in jeopardy. Meanwhile, Kalu’s body battles the spreading HIV virus.
