Plot Summary

No pretensions. No tantrums. Marjorie Lawrence is a prima donna in the most professional sense of the term. She's a foremost Wagnerian, a soprano equal to the vocal and physical demands of the composer's oeuvre. And she's a beacon of triumph to anyone who fights back when personal tragedy strikes. The acclaimed tale of Lawrence's rise from outback girl to renowned diva and her subsequent battle against polio won the 1955 Academy Award® for Story and Screenplay. Best Actress Oscar® nominee Eleanor Parker portrays Lawrence, with the film's selection of glorious arias voiced by uncredited opera-legend-in-the-making Eileen Farrell. Glenn Ford and Roger Moore join Parker in a Melody to remember.

Great story

This is an excellent movie. The story unfolds around a dream - dream to become an opera star. But life throws a curve and the plot evolves teaching us that hard work is at the root of all triumph.

Triumph Over Tragedy

A well told biography of one of the finest Wagnerian opera singers of the 20th Century. Eleanor Parker (Baroness in "The Sound of Music") gives one of her best performances; thank goodness, they had another Wagnerian opera legend (Eileen Farrell) sing for her. This is one of the best musicals ever made, I highly recommend it.

Wonderful film, bad edition

Wonderful Eleanor Parker is in the role of her life as Marjorie Lawrence the great soprano who rose above polio to sing again. Sadly the version here from Warner Bros video is grainy and cropped down. The original widescreen CinemaScope aspect is edited down to a "full frame" pan and scan version that leaves characters out of the frame.

The stereo soundtrack which features the great singing of Eileen Farrell sounds terrific but until iTunes offers a restored HD widescreen edition this is one only to rent not to buy.
