Plot Summary

Winner of the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature, this powerful film follows the secret smuggling of 9,300 Jewish children out of Nazi-occupied Germany in the late 1930s. Arranged by British sympathizers, the "Kindertransport" provided Jewish parents with a means of protecting their children from the anti-Semitic terror raging through Germany, by sending them "into the arms of strangers" -- foster families in Great Britain. Some would be moved from foster home to foster home, some would wind up in slave camps, and some would be sent back to Germany and into the death camps. Most would never see their families again. Recent interviews with survivors are combined with historical footage, newsreels and photographs to reveal their moving personal stories. Narrated by Academy Award and Golden Globe-winner and Emmy-nominee Dame Judy Dench ("Notes on a Scandal," "Casino Royale").

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Into the Arms of Strangers was produced with the help of the Holocaust Museum in Washington; it is a valuable, if necessarily fragmented, part of that institution's attempt to convey the enormity of what the Nazis did one life at a time. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: As well made and meticulously researched as we have come to expect from such pristine educational projects, enhanced with impressive archival footage and stills, heightened by carefully chosen music and sound, and elevated by properly dignified narration. – Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: An extraordinarily fine and understated documentary. – Richard Schickel, TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: What's being said makes for invaluable mandatory listening. – Mike Clark, USA Today, Jun 24, 2010

Into the Arms of Strangers

Realistic, inside commentary of the children that escaped the terrors of Nazi Germany - Into the Arms of Strangers. Gripping, heart-felt, somewhat sad, but truly remarkable. The sacrifices made by the parents were undeniably amazing.

We must never forget,

But we must also learn from this horrible tragedy. Thank you so much to those that have truly been affected by this ugly ugly war. You were willing to share your true broken hearts to others like me. In great adoration, thank you, Tina G.(Gorzalski)
