Plot Summary
Academy-Award®-winner Philip Seymour Hoffman (CAPOTE) and Academy-Award®-nominee Amy Ryan (GONE BABY GONE) star in this humorous tale of love, betrayal, and friendship that The New York Post calls “Dryly Hilarious.” The story centers around Jack, a limo driver with vague dreams of landing a job with the MTA and an obsession with reggae that has prompted him to begin a half-hearted attempt at growing dreadlocks. He spends most of his time hanging out with his best friend and fellow driver Clyde (John Ortiz of AMERICAN GANGSTER) and Clyde’s wife Lucy (Daphne Rubin-Vega of Broadway’s RENT). When Clyde and Lucy introduce him to Connie, however, things change. Being with Connie inspires Jack to learn to cook, pursue a new career, and take swimming lessons so he can give her the romantic boat ride of which she dreams. But as Jack and Connie cautiously circle commitment, Clyde and Lucy’s marriage begins to disintegrate.

Rotten: Hoffman is stymied by the difficult task of transforming stage material into a movie; Jack Goes Boating's camera just sits there while actors act.
Fresh: Jack Goes Boating is a successful work of art. To see this movie is to feel that you've lived it.
Fresh: This is one of those rare movies that genuinely likes its characters and wishes them the best; as agonizing as it can be to watch Jack fumble toward human connection, Hoffman knows the fumbling's the point.
Fresh: The actors make it new and poignant, and avoid going over the top in the story's limited psychic and physical space. Even at their highest pitch, the emotions of these characters come from hearts long worn down by the troubles we see.

See This For John Ortiz Performance
Underrated film from Seymour Hoffman. Yes some of the scenes have the unfortunate meet cute feeling that The Office has when Amy Ryan is on it, but John Ortiz's dark and subtle performance alone makes the movie worth seeing. Hoffman is great with the actors and aside from a dull indie soundtrack, a solid director.
