Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: "Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit" comes off as a reasonable facsimile, serviceable but not compelling, something that could pass for the real thing if you're not looking too hard.
Fresh: "Shadow Recruit" is fun in a minor, winter-season way.
Rotten: The dim star wattage in this fifth rehash is palpable from the start.
Fresh: The core essentials that made the previous Jack Ryan movies accessible and enjoyable remain intact in Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, even if many of the individual pieces have changed.

Entertaining, but mind-bogglingly dumb
This movie was entertaining, and some of the acting was surprisingly strong, but the plot was mind-bogglingly dumb. It was a hodge-podge of some particularly dim Tom Clancy ghost-writer's neo-con wet dreams all thrown together into one movie. I'm fine with an action movie not making a lot of sense, but it ought to be coherent enough not to be distracting in its ridiculousness.
As usual popular opinions are incorrect on multiple levels
The directing is thoughtful and tight, the performances believable and grounded with a cinematography which is beautiful.
A movie is not ‘great’ because it goes *boom* with computer-generated cartoon effects, is in vogue for some political point or because you like the rack on the protagonist’s girl friend. Even for those of us who make no apology for seeking out pure escapist fare either on occasion or perpetually— there has to be SOMETHING of substance, to however ephemerally, engage with on some level.
In the periphery, some of the musical scoring (the grade “D” voices singing the pitifully plugged in ‘generic-classical’) had an ugly showing and some elements of the screenplay are clearly not as strong as they might be for taking cliche shortcuts, still, the execution of performances and the cumulative elements are absolutely pleasing.
Good solid story telling without apology.
disappointment
I had heard somewhere that this was a good movie… maybe I misunderstood… You’ve got some good actors (a great one in Kiera), plenty of money to get a great look, and all I could think of was “What a sloppily made movie”.. editing… story lines… character development, all felt more b-movie than what this thing aspires to…too bad, I was looking forward to another good Jack Ryan series...
