Plot Summary

Fifteen year old Adam McCormick's life hasn't been the same since classmate Gracie Highsmith found Jamie Marks’s dead body at the edge of the river. The town is shocked, but as speculation swirls, it becomes clear that they knew as little about Jamie as they do about the circumstances surrounding his death. Adam becomes fixated on Jamie's death and gradually a deep bond develops between the living teenager and the dead boy's ghost. Their unlikely friendship provides Adam with the support and friendship he needs as the rest of the world falls apart. But the more attached Adam becomes to Jamie's ghost, the weaker his ties to reality become. As he struggles with the real world relationships, Adam is forced to rediscover what it means to be alive.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Temperate in tone but screaming with subtext, "Jamie Marks Is Dead" climbs above the current glut of supernaturally inclined entertainment by dint of a hushed unease that permeates almost every frame. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Aug 28, 2014

Fresh: The potentially ludicrous story is handled artfully enough here to cast an eerie but not off-putting spell throughout, though the ultimate point is more than a tad murky, and the desired poignancy doesn't fully come across. – Dennis Harvey, Variety, Jan 21, 2014

Rotten: "Jamie Marks Is Dead" admirably refuses to hew to conventional horror tropes and is acted with integrity by its young performers, but the film nonetheless has a nagging pulse problem. – Robert Abele, Los Angeles Times, Aug 29, 2014

Fresh: A sincere, psychologically savvy take on YA supernatural fare. – John DeFore, Hollywood Reporter, Jan 20, 2014

Loved this movie

The story itself is a beautiful balance between melancholy and sweetness.
Carter Smith did an amazing job along with cinematographer Darren Lew and a very talented cast.
It definitely lived up to it's genre of "thriller".
I would recommend this movie to all of my friends.

A bittersweet story of regret, loss, and redemption

This film succeeds in many ways; it tells a unique story that is haunting and relatable. There is always that one person we wish we would have spoken to, perhaps changing their life in ways we could not have ever anticipated, and seeing this scenario play out in this movie was as sad as it was uplifting. At times scary, and other times suspenseful, the subject matter is a very serious thing, and it could not have been handled in a more thoughtful manner. There are too many lives lost at the hands of bullying, and I hope that this film helps people see just how their actions and words might negatively affect those around them. As llid effort by a very talented cast. These teens are really a very special group of actors, and I hope to see them again soon.

Haunting and poignant

Honestly, don't bother if you are seeking out a bloody scare. This ghost movie is more about profound loneliness and the haunting need to be known and remembered.
