Plot Summary

Superstar Robert Redford ("Up Close and Personal," "Indecent Proposal") stars in this powerful and unforgettable wilderness epic of a man who turns his back on civilization and learns a new code of survival in a brutal land of isolated mountains and hostile Indians. The Los Angeles Times calls this box-office hit "an uncommon, extraordinarily appealing film experience," directed by Sidney Pollack ("The Firm," "Tootsie") and written by John Milius ("Apocalypse Now," "Magnum Force") and Academy Award-winner Edward Anhalt ("Member of the Wedding," "Panic in the Streets").

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: There are momoments of great beauty and terror and deeply earned pathos. There are as well such not-so-incidental pleasures as John Rubinstein's lovely and serviceable musical score, and a cast of excellent supporting actors. – Roger Greenspun, New York Times, Jul 16, 2008

Fresh: Director Sydney Pollack has given a skilled, observant mounting as he carefully allows the man to grow in experience and knowhow. – Variety Staff, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Pollack does right to put his faith in one man and a whole lot of mountains. The result is impressive. – Empire Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: A flawed but immensely appealing film. – Tom Milne, Time Out, May 26, 2008

Still the greatest film in my pocket!

I grew up where the real-life Jeremiah Johnson walked, trapped, hunted, and fished. While not 100% accurate, this film depicts the struggle of the Mountain Man. Every emotion is experienced in this film: from sorrow to joy, from hope to dispair, from courage to fear, and from war to peace. This film has it all for the lover of the outdoors, and for those wanting a taste of days long gone.

question

where can i get the song off of this movie?

A Very Moving Film & Story

Have wanted this film in my iPod and MacBook for a year. It's not a typical western, not an action film at its core, though there's plenty of action, and it's not really about one man's isolation in the mountains, either. The film is replete with the characters and people who touch a mountain man bent on escaping people, and the story has long been unforgettable. Robert Redford in his glory.
