Plot Summary
This colorful, modern comedy, executive produced by Julia Roberts, revolves around 10-year-old boy genius Henry James Herman (Jason Spevack) and his fervently left-wing single mother Patricia (Toni Collette). A misfit from birth, Henry's precocious, rabble-rousing ways catch up with him when he gets kicked out of school for writing "Manifestos on the Nature of Truth." Meanwhile, 12-year-old Audrey (Samantha Weinstein) has her own problems because of her single father, university professor Dr. Slavkin O'Hara (Michael Sheen), who used her as the test subject for his best-selling book Born Gay or Made that Way? Needless to say, she gets a not-so-nice nickname from her classmates. When Henry scores a scholarship to the university as a child prodigy, the two families cross paths and everything they knew about their lives is thrown to the wind.

Postmodern Fantasy
I normally don't write reviews but after renting this one, I feel compelled to present a warning for the curious. For me, JHC is a whimsically told black comedy with a sarcastic tone that aimed for empathy but achieved perplexed curiosity. Abundant with quirky, gruesome (yet punchless) deaths and cynical characters in bizarre situations (save for Henry who is Spock-like), the script sucked all dramatic emotional mass out to space with no trajectory. Instead, I paid particular attention to the cinematography (which is brilliant) and the inventive direction. From the description and the trailer, I estimated I would be in store for a thoughtful internal dialogue about its inherent themes - truth, morality, religion, social justice, science, ethics, etc. At the core, I wanted honesty (however messy it was), but overall, I got a disingenuous empty experience. I was disappointed to find an uninspiring soliloquy, a diatribe from the post-modern agnostic front railing against the Christian institution (via a Catholic school). JHC sets up angry religious straw men only to blow them down (with the lungs of children) - with the exception of a Muslim character (a woman teacher) who is portrayed with grace. If you lean left politically with a disdain for Christianity (as you perceive it), you'll probably enjoy this movie. It may prove cathartic. However, I would caution you (and those behind the film) to challenge your presuppositions. If you're opposed to bigotry that maligns with cold stereotypes, how can you justify this work of bigotry that persists against those with differing views? (You just got on the other end of the see-saw). I cannot recommend this movie as entertainment nor as a thoughtful entry into a discussion that demands temperance.
Great Movie
I liked it. Sometimes you people should learn to stop analyzing the movie and just sit back and watch it. It's entertaining when you don't fill your mind with criticism. Get a life haters!
Good watch
Real actors delivering amazing performances combine that with dark humor about socially inept people and you get a good movie.
