Plot Summary

Academy Award and Golden Globe-winner Denzel Washington ("Training Day," "American Gangster") stars as John Q. Archibald, an ordinary man who works at a factory and takes care of his family. But when John Q.'s young son needs an emergency heart transplant -- an operation that he can't afford and his health insurance won't cover -- John Q. will do anything to keep his son alive. As time and options run out, a desperate gamble becomes the only hope for John Q, as he takes an unwitting group of people hostage in the hospital emergency room. Now as many in the ER need medical care themselves and John Q. faces off with veteran police hostage negotiator and quick-tempered police chief, can a nonviolent end be found to a desperate situation?

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Cassavetes thinks he's making Dog Day Afternoon with a cause, but all he's done is to reduce everything he touches to a shrill, didactic cartoon. – Owen Gleiberman, Entertainment Weekly, Sep 7, 2011

Rotten: Represents a creative dead end for the organ-transplant movie. – Ed Park, Village Voice, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: The movie's manipulations become so transparent that it can't really touch our emotions, especially since it fails to follow through honestly on its premise. – Mick LaSalle, San Francisco Chronicle, Jun 18, 2002

Rotten: Manipulative sentimentality, contrived plot and phony climax. – Rex Reed, New York Observer, Jun 24, 2010

Honest To God…Denzel Shoulda Got An Oscar…Or At Least A Nomination For This One.

a great lost DW flick

This movie is great!! ...the performances in this drive the movie...everyone does AMAZING and you can relate to these people as characters...>HOWEVER<..John Q's wife will get on your last nerves because of how annoying she acts and talks!!! i cant stand her...but thank god shes not in the movie for a good portion of it....but this move is a great look about how far a father will go to save his son...9/10
