To understand what you are watching...
For those that have not read the short story by William Gibson, allow me to fill in some blanks. It is stated that the main character of the story has had some of his memories removed. Because of this, he has lost some of his humanity (if you go with the theory that memories are part of what makes us human). That is portrayed in this movie, and why Keanu's character at times seems "robotic." In this future technology is so pervasive, the human body rejects it. The place people often turn to for help in a capitalist system is the marketplace. It seems incapable of helping. Then we find out why our reluctant hero is involved in the plot in the first place. This, and New Rose Hotel, both illustrate the dark cyberpunk corporate malfeasance that makes the genre intriguing.
A 'classic' fav
I'm really surprised at the other reviews, this was easily my favorite Keanu movie until the first Matrix (though Bill & Ted were pretty close). It is not amazing, but it is a fun and unique story line. Futuristic technology was actually portrayed pretty well for the time in which it was made (3d web interface aside), though nowadays I'm sure he'd be smuggling terabytes(petabytes?) of data.
Entertaining Sci-fi
Why is it the only review for this movie is a person whose doesn't like Matrix? Albeit, this isn't a fantastic piece of science fiction BUT it can be enjoyed for what it is. Story is a bit kooky (like the super dolphin) but the pinball version of this movie rocked! Back in the day, people who like Sci-Fi weren't given much of a genre so when something came out that was decent, it was worth watching, which makes this a cult classic in my book.
