Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Ms. Chastain digs deep. Surrendering to her character's smoky voice-over and disastrous judgment, the actress finds pockets of soul in a role that's part Jessica Rabbit, part Marilyn Monroe. – Jeannette Catsoulis, New York Times, Oct 29, 2010

Rotten: Though stretched to a two-hour run time, Doctorow's socially critical tale is reduced to queasy spectacle. – Rob Nelson, Variety, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: More epic than it needs to be and less profound than it should be, "Jolene" remains a watchable excursion into human frailty and foibles. – Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times, Nov 4, 2010

Rotten: Throughout, Chastain delivers a full-bodied debut performance, but she's ultimately stuck taking her wandering-soul protagonist far more seriously than it -- or the film -- deserves. – Nick Schager, Village Voice, Oct 26, 2010

Don't go there!

Pointless collection of hard knock stories culminating in a truly laughable ending. Weak cinematography, and the lead actress is the only person in the movie who can act.

Worth a look, but rent before you buy!

A movie like this is not everyone's cup of tea, but it's most definitely worth it to see Jessica Chastain's performance.

The pro's for the movie are Chastain's performance and the pacing of the film. If you can get into a story that doesn't involve explosions, shootouts, or aliens then you might find this to be a quiet gem of a human study. Francis Fisher turns in a great performance that is too short.

Neutral: Simple story with no real surprises and the movie suffers from that in the regard that plot points are a bit predictable - if you forget the fact that many times in life certain events WILL play out in a certain way no matter what. It's the responses of the protagonist that shine here.

The cons: The cinematography is lacking - almost to a movie of the week quality. Chaz Palmenteri sleeps his way through yet another mobster role and Dermot Mulroney seems lost, but that could very possibly be that the role was way below his abilities. These three points are what bring the movie down to three stars for me.

Given a chance, "Jolene" can be an entertaining movie.
