Plot Summary
Writer, teacher, mythologist, storyteller, and scholar Joseph Campbell had a profound influence on how we view ourselves and the world. This new portrait brings us closer to his work and the life to which he said "yes." The hero's journey, Campbell's own quest, was a pathless journey of inquiry, discovery, delight, and joy.

A quick life history of the man. Also different snippits of performances, speeches and such. Very broad rendering. A little too short, but great stories and an easy - light understanding of why he is so loved and his much heralded thousand faced hero. Easily enjoyed more than once.
Books are Better
The most beloved Joseph Campbell deserves a better presentation of his ideas. I am not suggesting something slick, just something deeper. Perhaps letting go of those lame moves on the art work and symbols would help. I love this guy, but he comes off as a lesser version of his writings. There is the one shot where there are smirking boys in the background, one of whom walks away while Campbell is lecturing. Also, while he is speaking to an intimate group there is a crowd conversing in the background leaving the impression that what he is saying is a minor part of what is going on. This is one of those tributes that is not. Disappointing.
The Man Not The Journey
This Doc is a very short tribute to a much greater man. It definitely touches on Campbell's life for a beginner but I fail to see how the title: The Hero's Journey is relevant to this documentary. This doesn't explain the Hero's Journey - Campbell's book does that. What this explains is the brief summary of Campbell's life and his ideals to an extent that in my opinion should have gone deeper into. Overall however this flick was a great watch. Thanks to the filmmakers who put probably rare footage of this man together for the world to see.
