Plot Summary
The small town of Pacashau, Georgia, has fallen on hard times, but the people are counting on the Divinity Church Choir to lift their spirits by winning the National Joyful Noise Competition. The choir has always known how to sing in harmony, but the discord between its two leading ladies now threatens to tear them apart. Their newly appointed director, Vi Rose Hill (Latifah), stubbornly wants to stick with their tried-and-true traditional style, while the fiery G.G. Sparrow (Parton) thinks tried-and-true translates to tired-and-old. Shaking things up even more is the arrival of G.G.'s rebellious grandson, Randy (Jeremy Jordan). Randy has an ear for music, but he also has an eye for Vi Rose's beautiful and talented daughter, Olivia (Keke Palmer). If these two strong-willed women can put aside their differences for the good of the people in their town, they--and their choir--may make the most joyful noise of all.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Lots of talented young singers decorate the scenery, notably Jeremy Jordan who has vocal and acting chops that shine even in this bucket of Glee Goes Gospel cornpone.
Rotten: It wants to be a charming, down-home good time, but it struggles to hit the right notes.
Rotten: Has the good fortune of being acted with enthusiasm by a very appealing cast, or else it would be completely unbearable instead of just mundane.
Rotten: An unholy mess.

A STANDARD FEEL-GOOD MOVIE
"Joyful Noise" basically contains everything you'd expect it to have: solidly entertaining musical numbers, a diverse, stand-out cast and a consistently cheerful vibe. But at the same time, it often tends to fall under the weight of its moderately predictable, formulaic premise. And while the film does earn points for Queen Latifah and Dolly Parton's hilarious chemistry, their scenes together never quite leave a lasting impression. The dialogue can also be very clichéd and stilted, and most of the characters are either given too little or too much development and exposition then needed. But all those flaws aside, I still found this to be a great, uplifting movie. Its religious agenda isn't too preachy to the point of excess, the upbeat music is extremely catchy and the humor can be surprisingly strong at times. Yes, the story isn't the most original and is often bogged down by heavy-handed, overly sentimental performances, but for what it is, "Joyful Noise" is a charming, toe-tapping treat that ultimately aims to please its audience and inevitably succeeds. It's harmless, satisfying, feel-good entertainment that's at least worth renting, especially if you love great gospel music.
Insperrational
