Plot Summary
A portrait of the effects of schizophrenia on family life is the central focus in this film about a schizophrenic boy named Julien (Ewen Bremner - "Fool's Gold," ";Trainspotting") who works in a school for the blind. Julien lives at home with his pregnant sister Pearl (Academy Award and Golden Globe-nominee Chloë Sevigny - "Boys Don't Cry," "Zodiac"), his brother Chris, who wrestles in his spare time; and their violent father, who slaps his children around, hoses them down with water, and offers to pay Chris ten dollars to dress up in his late mother's clothes and dance. Eventually Julien escapes from his home and interacts with people on the street.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: Projects such as Julien exist not to explore the essentials of a film, but to induce in audiences a kind of critical vertigo.
Rotten: A self-indulgent mess.
Rotten: Julien Donkey-Boy is tiresome in the extreme.

Raw as nails
But ill always be floored by it. I saw this when i was really young and inmressionable. Watching it in recent years ive gotten past the claustrophobia of it and realized the grittiness it so extremely depicts is very honest. It's a beautiful and realistic exploration of a Schizophrenic dude and his troubled family life. Harmony's uncle inspiried this I guess, i'd hate to know what that was like. But I tihnk Korine used Dogme 95 to its fullest. Julien Donkey-Boy is nauseating but also very serene.
Another Masterpiece from Harmony Korine
This was really disturbing, but that kind of disturbing that stays with you forever. I laughed at a few parts like the black albino rapping, and the the armless man who was psychic and could play the drums. That being said there is a lot of seriously graphic scenes in this film, these rawly graphic scenes is what makes it original and haunting. I have only seen Kids and This film so far by Harmony, but his films always leave me with that feeling. And that right there is true cinematic art. Films that make you think about life, films that make you think why. The ending had me in tears. This film is as twisted as it is beautiful and should be watched by all lovers of true art and cinema.
