Plot Summary

In a house haunted with memories, gangster and father Ulysses Pick (Jason Patric) arrives home after a long absence towing the body of a teenaged girl and a bound and gagged young man. His gang waits inside his house, having shot their way past police. There is friction in the ranks. Ulysses, however, is focused on one thing: journey-ing through the house, room by room, and reaching his wife Hyacinth (Isabella Rossellini) in her bedroom upstairs. The equilibrium of the house has been disturbed and his odyssey eventually becomes an emotional tour, as the ghostly nooks and crannies of the house reveal more about the mysterious Pick family.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: To a die-hard Maddinite this may be a little disappointing, but for that reason "Keyhole" may also be a perfect gateway into the bizarre and fertile world of a unique film artist. – A.O. Scott, New York Times, Apr 5, 2012

Rotten: Amid the mythical allusions and the climate of decay, "Keyhole" overthinks its exploration of memory and forgiveness. – Sheri Linden, Los Angeles Times, Apr 12, 2012

Fresh: The film is infectiously somnambulant, so convincingly and unrelentingly dreamlike that its sudden end mimics the sensation of snapping awake from deep sleep. – Karina Longworth, Village Voice, Apr 3, 2012

Fresh: Maddin looks to the past of film the same way he often obsessively examines his own, and the two can't really be separated. – Ian Buckwalter, NPR, Apr 6, 2012
