Plot Summary

King David, starring Richard Gere, follows the real-life story of the lowly shepherd boy whose shrewdness and bravery helped him ascend to the throne of ancient Israel. But this film is much more than just another Biblical epic. Richard Gere and a fine supporting cast present a fresh new look at the people who actually lived the events that have become legend-from David's battle with Goliath to his self-destructive yearning for Bathsheba.

Top Critics' Reviews

Rotten: Directed by Bruce Beresford in the worried manner of someone who feels it a triumph just to have gotten all the kings, prophets, soldiers, frond-waving townspeople, horses and donkeys on and off the screen on time. – Vincent Canby, New York Times, Mar 5, 2014

Rotten: Though the overall problems may not be of his making, Richard Gere is of little help in the title role. Granted, he could have been truly awful (which he isn't), but he doesn't seem comfortable, either. – Variety Staff, Variety, Mar 5, 2014

Rotten: The film is stuffed with anonymous, identically bearded faces, and it drowns in them. – Dave Kehr, Chicago Reader, Mar 5, 2014

Rotten: It seems a fundamental error to approach such a gory fantasia as though it were sober, four-square history. – Geoff Andrew, Time Out, Mar 5, 2014

Saw This In Theater When It Came Out...

My date and I were a little embarassed at how poorly the Biblical text was followed. It was interesting to see how 'Hollywood' portrayed the story, despite the inaccuracies. I do think that adults could watch this and spark a discussion about what the Biblical text actually records in regards to the events of King David's life. We know that 'Hollywood' is not out to chronicle a Biblical world-view, so I would not really recommend this.

I love this movie!

It is a great movie but it is NOT Biblically correct by any means! Nudity is not a necessity but I can't change the movie, my children love king David but of course they are never allowed to see nudity... The story line is great, but it also gives you and your children the ability to dig into your bibles and learn the truth!

Biblically Correct??????????

Any one who has been to Church or Sunday School will see that this Movie is extremely Non Biblically Correct. I was extremely disappointed in this movie and very glad I rented it and did not buy it. Not only were the events not in the correct order but they were completely inaccurate, For example Bathsheba did not tell David she would not sleep with him while her husband was alive!!!! That was THE MAJOR SIN in David's life. THE pivotal event in his life and story!!!!!!! I understand changing and enhancing things to make a movie easier to follow or more entertaining. but the mistakes in this movie were not from taking Artistic license for entertainment purposes. They only served to make the movie frustrating and let the producers show more bare breasts. This movie is one of only 2 movies I would truly tell people not to get. The other is Broke Back Mountain. Neither are even worth the $2.99 rental cost.
