Rotten: Our response to the ape's doom, once touched by authentic tragedy, is now marked by relief that this wretchedly excessive movie is finally over.
Fresh: Kong is a showy, state-of-the-art popcorn movie, faithful to the spirit of the 1933 original but generously adrenalized with the best effects money can buy.
Fresh: One hundred eighty-seven minutes of mesmerization, astonishment, thrills, chills, spills, kills and ills, Peter Jackson's big monkey picture show is certainly the best popular entertainment of the year.
Fresh: It clocks in at over three hours, but Peter Jackson's remake of the 1933 classic is gripping nonetheless.

Hugely Underrated, Nearly Topping The Original in Pure Escapism...
After the immense success of The Lord of the Rings trilogy -- and its profound affect on me -- I was eager to see Peter Jackson's take on King Kong, a film that is a dream come true for him. The acting is all great, not a stale person in the bunch. Jack Black is marvelous as Carl Denham, playing him as a ostentatious filmmaker with heavy deliveries. Naomi Watts was a perfect choice for Ann Darrow, and despite the criticism for casting Adrian Brody as the hero, it was a fine decision because of the variation of the character made by the writers. Everyone else is worth an applause, the most-deserving of which easily goes to Andy Serkis for his performance as Kong, and an upset that he didn't get an Academy Award nomination (a stupid rule imposed). The special effects help bring Kong to life, and the monstrous fight between him and the T. rexes is jaw-dropping. While not as real-looking as the dinosaurs in Jurassic Park, the ones seen here are just as terrifying and cool looking. Of course, the real star is Kong, and with the advancement of CGI, the gorilla is presented as what seems like a flesh and blood living creature. Truly remarkable. James Newton Howard's score is very good. While very heavy on the brass, and a slightly sleep-inducing theme for Kong, Howard has composed a nicely done piece with several great tracks, and considering the time crunch, it's pretty stunning to hear the final result. Howard Shore's rejected score would be nice to hear should it ever be released. The writing and direction is phenomenal. Unlike the Kong-fearing damsel in distress that was Fay Wray's or the creepy Kong-loving damsel in distress that was Jessica Lange's character, Phillipa Boyens, Fran Walsh, and Peter Jackson have combined what worked and what didn't to produce a script that made Watt's Ann Darrow care for Kong in a sense as a living creature that was treated unjustly. Watt's character feels compassion for the ape, enough so to make us as well. The ending is beautiful and heartbreaking. Overall, King Kong is a venture in epic storytelling. While I must admit, Kong does tend to drag as we await to see the beast, though Jackson fills in that spot with character introduction and development. With pure excitement and a heart-wrenching story, this is a film I highly recommend.
It's about time!
I was beginning to wonder if they would ever put this on iTunes. And it's here! This is by far one of the best movies I've seen. Now if they could get The Lord of the Rings on here then that'd be another story...
my favorite movie ever
This is an amazing movie! I think that it is the best movie ever. It is so worth your time. The effects are amazing (Kong and the dinos look real) and the acting is superb. It owns my favorite movie list beating greats like Terminator 2 and Black Hawk Down. Peter Jackson does it again. The T rex sequence is great and the finale on the Empire State Building just blew my mind away. It is so worth your money. This is an awesome movie.
