Plot Summary

During the 1994 Rwandan genocide, the Mufti of Rwanda, the most respected Muslim leader in the country, issued a fatwa forbidding Muslims from participating in the killing of the Tutsi. As the country became a slaughterhouse, mosques became places of refuge where Muslims and Christians, Hutus and Tutsis came together to protect each other. Kinyarwanda is based on true accounts from survivors who took refuge at the Grand Mosque of Kigali and the Imams who opened their doors to give refuge to the Tutsi and to those Hutu who refused to participate in the killing. The story interweaves six different tales that together form one grand narrative, providing the most complex and real depiction yet presented of life and human resilience during the genocide. With an amalgamation of characters we pay homage to many, using the voices of a few. We follow the young lovers, the child, the couple, the soldiers, the Imam, and the priest as they are swept up by the chaos of the world around them.

Fresh: It adds texture to the central facts: This happened, and this matters. – David DeWitt, New York Times, Dec 1, 2011

Fresh: While hardly an all-inclusive look at this complex conflict, paints a heartfelt, fairly restrained picture of a nation under siege. – Gary Goldstein, Los Angeles Times, Dec 1, 2011

Fresh: Cast with both professional and novice actors (which results in uneven performances), the beautifully shot film is filled with exquisite moments... – Ernest Hardy, Village Voice, Nov 29, 2011

Fresh: Each vignette adds to the mosaic. Characters from one turn up in another. Gradually a powerful outcome is arrived at. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Dec 1, 2011

Powerful and Transformative Film

I was privileged to see a premiere of this film at Sundance in 2011. It was a deserving winner of the Audience award for World Cinema.

This film is a moving tribute to the people of Rwanda, those who endured one of the modern era's most horrific genocides. There are moments of great hope and great sorrow, and director Alrick Brown captures the humanity which was on display in the midst of the tragedy.

You will enjoy watching this film, and rewatching it to catch the nuanced performances of even the "amateur" actors which Brown and his producers gathered for the INCREDIBLY short filming schedule (I think I recall him saying it was 16 days!).

The accolades given this film are well-deserved - share this film with everyone you know, and spread the message of the power of forgiveness to overcome even the greatest of evils.

Amazing!

simply put this movie was a gift...a gift. it's so rare for a movie to honestly depict the range of emotions relevant in tragic situations. this movie details the humanity, the pain, the justice, the urgency, the hope. it encourages us to dig deep, envision a more humane world and, above all, to receive and respect each other with love and respect. thank you to alrick brown for sharing such a beautiful and relevant story.
