Plot Summary

Jessica Stein is a sensitive but neurotic New York journalist who also happens to be at the end of her emotional rope. Her brother’s engaged, her best friend’s pregnant, she hasn’t dated in a year, and she can’t sleep. After an optimistic but nightmarish dating spree, she happens upon an intriguing personal ad...whose only drawback is that it’s in the “women seeking women” section. On a daring whim, she decides to answer it, and meets funky downtown hipster Helen Cooper. A lively evening of banter, connection and heated debate culminates in a kiss that confounds and intrigues even the reluctant Jessica. Kissing Jessica Stein is a modern romantic comedy that breaks all the rules, blurring the lines between friendship and romantic love, and finding the funny, surprising and ultimately poignant overlap between the two.

This again?

The movie shows nothing about lesbianism or lesbian culture, and *definitely* nothing about self-discovery, like all these other reviewers are saying, as no one's identity ever actually changes in the end. It's a trifling story about a straight girl who out tried women because she ran out of options. It's an insult to lesbianism. As has been so typical of lesbian-themed plotlines in the past sixty years, heterosexuality triumphs in the end so as not to make a mainstream audience feel uncomfortable by challenging the dominant ideology. In fact, the only good thing I can say about it is that I absolutely adore Scott Cohen as an actor.

Great film about self awareness

Whether you are gay or straight, male or female you will enjoy this clever, well-written sincere movie about a woman in her mid-late twenties finding her way in relationships and love. There are few movies on Itunes worth watching and this is definitely one of them. Highly entertaining, funny, smart and heartfelt.

Enjoyable, funny, and honest

I saw this at the LA Film Festival at its first showing, with a giant audience, and it won the audience award. It was sweet, funny, insightful, and very, very witty. Jennifer Westfeldt recently had a series I loved (about being pregnant) that was really sharply funny, but it hasn't continued, unfortunately. My favorite part was Scott Cohen, whose character is transformed by seeing his friend explore her entire self and her freedom, and get back in touch with her soul. He's one sexy beast. I love his rooftop champagne guzzling near the end, very funny.
