Plot Summary

Jane Fonda ("Coming Home," "Nine to Five," "On Golden Pond") took home an Academy Award for her haunting portrayal of a high-priced call girl being stalked by a psychopath. Donald Sutherland ("A Time to Kill," "Disclosure") co-stars as the reluctant private eye who arrives in New York in his search for a missing suburban husband, but ends up protecting this prostitute whose path he's crossed. Master filmmaker Alan J. Pakula ("All the President's Men," "Sophie's Choice," "Presumed Innocent") directed this romantic detective-thriller/character study and the screenplay received an Academy Award nomination.

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: [Fonda] makes all the right choices, from the mechanics of her walk and her voice inflection to the penetration of the girl's raging psyche. It is a rare performance. – Jay Cocks, TIME Magazine, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: With Fonda and Sutherland, you have actors who understand and sympathize with their characters, and you have a vehicle worthy of that sort of intelligence. So the fact that the thriller stuff doesn't always work isn't so important. – Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times, Jul 7, 2010

Fresh: Fonda is simply a revelation, beautiful, sassy and streetwise, and yet hauntingly vulnerable. She deserved her Oscar in a role she has never bettered. – Film4, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: For once, a genuinely psychological thriller. – Geoff Andrew, Time Out, Aug 30, 2009

Subtle but deadly

One of the all-time great murder mysteries to come out of the early 70s free love and drug scene. Outstanding acting from both leads. Tension builds slowly to a stunning ending.

Understated thriller of the 70's

I love this film! It was truly produced well between the air of creepiness in the cinematography, certain settings of the film and the soundtrack!
Sutherland is truly a great actor. If you like this film, you should also see "Don't Look Now"......

a gem of 70's cinema

terrific example of everything wonderful about how gritty 70's cinema was. excellent performances all around. unsettling and effective use of sparse scoring. jane fonda deserved the heck out of her oscar for best actress for this performance. wonderful film!
