Plot Summary

Sometimes you find love where you'd least expect it. Just ask Lars (Gosling), a sweet but quirky guy who thinks he's found the girl of his dreams in a life-sized doll named Bianca. Lars is completely content with his artificial girlfriend, but when he develops feelings for Margo, an attractive co-worker, Lars finds himself lost in a hilariously unique love triangle, hoping to somehow discover the real meaning of true love. Offbeat and endearing, this romantic comedy takes a fresh look at dating and relationships and dares to ask the question: What's so wrong with being happy?

Top Critics' Reviews

Fresh: Under Mr. Gillespie's admirably directed seriousness of tone, the performers, particularly Mr. Gosling, Ms. Mortimer, Mr. Schneider, Ms. Clarkson, Ms. Gardner and Mr. Reid, never miss a beat. – Andrew Sarris, New York Observer, Jan 4, 2008

Fresh: Both hilarious and poignant, with a Capraesque humanity that caught me completely off guard. – J. R. Jones, Chicago Reader, Jun 24, 2010

Fresh: It's the script by Nancy Oliver, the very idea of the thing, that steals your heart. Kink has never felt so sweet and decent. – Tom Long, Detroit News, Jun 24, 2010

Rotten: Lars and the Real Girl remains suspended somewhere between perversity and pap, with only Gosling hinting at the mingling that might have been. – Geoff Pevere, Toronto Star, Sep 19, 2008

On the edge of absurd...in a good way

This movie in careless hands would fail, the acting, directing and maturity of all involved made a movie which premise could be easily misunderstood as "farley brothers" film. and turns it into a moving dramatic bittersweet story of a man so withdrawn from the world, himself and the people around him that falling in love with an inanimate object his safest bet at what seems like the last shreds of emotional survival of a very lonely man. The lead actor sells it perfect, not heavy handed, no obvious trick's, his whole face carries the movie and 2 more good choices in material and this guy is going to be one of the greats. Oddly enough he reminded me of 2 actors who could not be more different. He has the "nice guy on the edge of violent insanity" qualities of Ed Norton and the quirkiness of David Arquette (when he isnt trying so hard to be weird and actually acts) This is a small town movie, about small town people with little to no music, its pacing is slow and if you don't have any interest or insight into the human condition or any sense of informed nuance, then please skip it. But if you have a soul and care about things that don't blow up or jiggle in a t-shirt, this is a great movie and well worth a rental.

Not what I was expecting in a GOOD way

If you just gone by a superficial description of this movie; "Guy buys sex doll for girlfriend," you'd really be missing what this movie is really about. Yes, it's funny how Lars treats his new girlfriend, but the real story is about how a community came together to help a deeply lonely and hurt man. It is funny, but more so heartfelt and touching, as Lars deals with his issues through Bianca, his "girlfriend," whose story literally takes on a life of its own. I can't see anyway in which this movie was not superbly crafted. The writing, acting, editing all come together in what, IMHO, is Oscar worthy.

Emotionally funny

This movie has it all, the laughs; the tears, love, delusion, stupidity, romance, infatuation, religion, health etc.... without even trying. It moved me to the core. Dude, what are you waiting for, rent it or buy it.... you won't regret it.
