Fresh: Although Last Night eschews sentimentality, the situation is so extreme that there is ultimately no avoiding it. But the intense performances of [Ms Oh and McKellar] ... keep the suds from billowing into more than a few discreet bubbles.
Fresh: Bare-bones filmmaking, Last Night is nothing special to look at, but it has a witty, trenchant script, lots of complicated characters, and a few actors who turn human frailty into something nearly sublime.

Rotten: McKellar is a good storyteller, and he demonstrates a clever -- albeit dark -- sense of humor. But much of it goes for naught because of the movie's sterile patina.

Haunting
I don't know what it is about this movie: It's got no special effects, nothing blows up, there's no fight-to-the-finish.
But its almost matter-of-fact depiction of the end of the world keeps popping up in my mind. What would you do if you knew that the world was going to end and you had plenty of advance notice and there was nothing you could do to stop it? How would you spend the "last night"?
The movie is sometimes comic, sometimes sad, sometimes existential, and--most hauntingly--almost always normal. It's flawed, but it keeps coming back to me. Watch it on a quiet night with someone who matters to you.
Last Night
The only reason I rented this movie is because my favorite actress Genevieve Bujold is in it. Unfortunatly, she is only in the film for about five minutes. But as usual she makes a huge impact in the time she has on screen.
Luckily for us she is in a darn good movie. It is an end of the world film the likes of you have never seen before. There is not one special effect to be seen in this film. Yet accomplishes everything that Deep Impact and Armageddon could not. Great story line and performances by a cast that is top notch.
There is nothing better than finding a movie that you had no expectations going in and by the end of the film thinking "now that is how films should be made." Anyone connected with this movie should be proud of themselves. Especially Genevieve Bujold. But that was a given.
