Plot Summary
Patricia Clarkson powers this humorous drama about Celia, an aging matriarch who wants everyone to gather one last time at the family's gorgeous Lake Tahoe manor and reminisce before she puts it on the market. However, her sons are too preoccupied with their own busy lives and struggling relationships for any nostalgia, and the dream of a splendid Labor Day weekend dies quickly in a whirlwind of contention, crisis and family dysfunction. Set in the infamous Hurricane Bay house of George Stevens' 1951 melodrama A Place In The Sun, where Elizabeth Taylor and Montgomery Clift once caused fireworks, Last Weekend gracefully captures the soulful transformation in Celia as she is forced to let go of her fantasy and attend to the harsh reality brought on by a sudden emergency.

Top Critics' Reviews
Rotten: This is one Lands' End catalog of a movie, with woodsy, impeccably appointed interiors; crowded tables of culinary plenty; and a sunny society fund-raiser at the spread of a neighbor.
Rotten: Its eventual reach for warm-and-fuzzy emotional catharsis rings hollow among characters that never become more than disagreeably shallow products of unexamined privilege.
Rotten: All the possibilities of a richly drawn family squabble fade faster than the final days of summer.
Rotten: There's not a three-dimensional character or nuanced observation to be seen here.

THE LAST WEEKEND
I thought this was a very brave film. The film makers didn’t shy away from portraying reality, at least a particular slice of it. They offered up light and shadow without too much commentary, simply portraying it in its subtle and not so subtle complexity. I liked and disliked all the characters. I judged some of their actions, while still caring and having compassion. Patricia Clarkson gives an evocative, haunting performance. The bulk of the cast (all the main characters) are equally believable and nuanced. Together they create a world that doesn’t apologize for what it is, that allows us into the lifestyle of the few, while sharing the fear, love and unskillfulness that in part of humanity as a whole. I liked that the film doesn’t tell us what to think and feel. It offers up the intimate interactions of one family, and leaves the work of perspective up to us. THE LAST WEEKEND felt more like delving into a good novel than watching a Hollywood movie, which made at least this viewer quite happy she risked the unknown and watched it.
The Last Weekend
I really, really wanted to like this movie. The pacing was off, the script was forced. The actors were good, given their material, but things just didn’t add up. The two stars are for the photography. It was fantastic.
